A PLAY ABOUT THE LEGEND OF
ST. PIRAN
Over
the centuries many pilgrims have visited the site of St Piran's Oratory or
Chapel. The parishioners of Perranzabuloe have regularly done so on St.
Piran's Day on 5th March. The Perranzabuloe Old Cornwall Society have led
pilgrimages to the Oratory in late October as part of their Perran Feast
celebrations. Now hundreds and thousands of people come from all over
Cornwall and beyond to remember and honour a great man of Cornwall - PIRAN.
The play depicting the legend of St Piran is performed by people from the
community of Perranzabuloe on the nearest Sunday to the 5th of March. It
is in three parts.
Part 1: Piran's arrest in Ireland performed in the sand dunes
(towans)
Part 2: Piran arrives in Cornwall and builds his Oratory
performed at the site of the Oratory
Part 3: The rise and demise of Cornish mining, procession
showing Cornwall today and its hopes for the future - performed near the
Norman Church and around St Piran's Cross
The play finishes with the crowd waving their St Piran flags and singing
Trelawny.
